Brazil debates a strategic partnership with the United States on green hydrogen

Scarlet Ibarra / February 27, 2024 | 16:41
The discussion revolves around cooperation for energy transition signed between both countries in 2023 during the G20 in India.

Brazil is deliberating strategic alliances regarding low-carbon hydrogen with the United States. During the dialogue with representatives from both countries, the launch of the Clean Hydrogen Action Committee of the Clean Energy Industries Dialogue (CEID) between the United States and Brazil took place.

The debate stems from the cooperation for energy transition signed between the Brazilian Minister and the Secretary of the Department of Energy of the United States, Jennifer Granholm, in July 2023 in Goa, India.

"Brazil has significant inequality, and this energy transition process can help, in addition to addressing the issue of decarbonizing the planet, to assist our country in achieving social justice. The United States is a very important partner in strategic matters," emphasized Minister Alexandre Silveira.

What is the purpose of CEID?

The objective of the Clean Hydrogen Action Committee of the Clean Energy Industries Dialogue is to promote the exchange of information and best practices, increase bilateral trade, and foster more partnerships and investments between the United States and Brazil.

During the launch, the Director of the Energy Transition Department of the MME, Mariana Espécie, presented information on the National Hydrogen Program (PNH2). "The PNH2 is the main institutional framework for developing the national low-carbon hydrogen market. The program's goal was to bring a cross-cutting strategy, involving various government actors. The establishment of international alliances is also part of the strategies established by Brazil," she commented.

According to data from the MME, Brazil has the technical potential to produce 1.8 gigatonnes of hydrogen per year. Currently, there are several projects under development in various regions of the country, totaling more than US$30 billion in announced investments. "Brazil is designing its own certification system to ensure the Brazilian state's approval of the carbon emissions level of the hydrogen to be produced in the country, as part of a voluntary adherence scheme," added Mariana.

Brazil as a consolidated H2V producer by 2030

With the launch of the Triennial Work Plan of the PNH2 in 2023, Brazil established deadlines and priorities to structure the hydrogen economy in the country.

By 2025, the goal is to deploy low-carbon hydrogen pilot plants in all regions of the country. By 2030, the goal is to consolidate the country as the world's most competitive molecule producer, and by 2035, to consolidate low-carbon hydrogen hubs.
