Codelco, the Chilean state-owned copper mining company and world’s largest copper producer, has signed a letter of intent with ABB, the Swiss-Swedish multinational technology corporation, to explore decarbonisation strategies for mining operations in Chile.
The agreement, announced at the MINExpo 2024 trade show in Las Vegas, aims to implement digital technologies, automation systems, and electrification solutions across Codelco’s mining sites. These technologies will support Codelco’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions.
Codelco operates multiple open-pit and underground mines throughout Chile, producing 1.6 million tonnes of copper annually. The company launched its sustainability roadmap in 2019, targeting a 70% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.
The collaboration will examine methods to integrate digital systems for sustainable operations. These systems monitor and optimise energy consumption, equipment performance, and resource utilisation in real-time.
One focus area is the electrification of mining vehicle fleets. This involves replacing diesel-powered trucks and equipment with electric alternatives, significantly reducing on-site emissions.
ABB’s eMine portfolio, a suite of electrification technologies designed for mining applications, will be central to the project. The system incorporates charging infrastructure, battery management, and power distribution solutions.
The partnership will evaluate both existing operations and future mining projects. Codelco operates seven mines in Chile, including the Chuquicamata site, which is transitioning from open-pit to underground mining.
Vice President of Mining Resources, Development, and Innovation at Codelco, Nicolás Rivera, says: “We have conducted site visits and technology discussions. This announcement formalises our intention to accelerate decarbonisation efforts.”
Digital twin technology, which creates virtual replicas of physical mining operations, will be implemented across Codelco sites. This enables operators to simulate and optimise processes before deployment.
ABB has previously deployed digital twins in mining environments. The technology allows for predictive maintenance, enhanced safety protocols, and improved operational efficiency.
Process automation systems will be integrated throughout the mining value chain. These systems coordinate activities from extraction to processing, reducing manual intervention and improving consistency.
The mining sector faces increasing pressure to reduce environmental impact while maintaining production levels. Codelco’s copper output is essential for renewable energy technologies and electric vehicles.
ABB brings 130 years of mining industry experience to the partnership. The company has developed automation and electrification solutions for mining companies globally.
Division President of ABB Process Industries, Joachim Braun, reveals: “Quality reserves are becoming harder to reach. Digitalization, automation and electrification maintain supplies for the current energy transition.”
